In previous testing, the soy-based dust suppressant developed at NDSU was able to soften and rejuvenate aged asphalt. Recent trials with a roofing company have shown that a modified version can also soften aged asphalt shingles increasing their repairability and extending the lifespan of existing roofing. The goal of the proposed research is to modify the existing formula and test several variations on aged shingles. The formulas will be made at NDSU and tested on an outdoor fixture of aged shingles located on the NDSU campus. After months of exposure, the shingles will be removed and subjected to lab tests to gauge the efficacy of the various treatments. The optimal formula will be down selected, produced, marketed and sold by BioBlend LLC in parallel to the existing dust control products. The use of bio-based roof extenders has been going on for 15-20 years at a cost to the homeowner of $1,500 - $2,000. These treatments are applied through a network of licensed contractors. Our plan will be to offer our roof rejuvenator to roofing companies and do-it-yourselfers at a much lower cost. The material will be available for purchase on-line or local hardware store in a form that can be applied with a common yard sprayer. There are more than 112 million homes in the US with asphalt roofs with the average roof requiring 4-5 pails of ready to apply material. Ifjust 2% of these homes are treated, the amount of soybean oil would equate to 11 million bushels.
